Miette | Special Archive Edition for All Hallows’ Eve
Miette | The Little Mourner
LEFT BEHIND | Special Archive Edition No. 001
An original, one-of-a-kind textile art doll, recovered from a forgotten fairytale.
The Story
Miette once belonged to Edith Vane, a seven-year-old girl who lived at Vane House in 1893.
In the weeks before her disappearance, Edith became convinced that her beloved companion had died. She prepared a small black coffin and fashioned a mourning shroud, carefully embroidering her own initials into the cloth.
Edith insisted that Miette must be buried before she could return.
On All Hallows’ Eve, 1893, Edith vanished.
Many years later, a small coffin was discovered beneath the nursery floorboards. Inside lay Miette, still wrapped in her shroud.
Beneath the cloth, strange pale markings covered her body. No earlier account of Miette mentioned these markings.
Whether Edith buried her companion out of grief, or out of fear, remains unknown.
The Artwork
Miette is the first of my Special Archive Editions, a collection of imagined and particularly unusual recovered objects, created only on rare occasions.
Individually designed, sewn and hand-painted, Miette is a unique textile artwork featuring intricate spectral markings, delicate embellishments and a removable, distressed mourning shroud bearing the initials E.V.
She rests inside her own black wooden coffin, specially lined with gathered fabric and accompanied by dried flowers, an identification tag and her individual archive documentation.
The shroud can be removed to reveal the detailed painting beneath, allowing Miette to be displayed in two ways.
