Wallace works for the Highways Agency and takes an almost erotic level of joy in putting up temporary traffic lights on the A4. Nothing delights him more than creating a six-mile tailback and watching commuters seethe from the safety of a high-vis vest. On at least three occasions, he’s done it off the clock just for the thrill of it and a cheeky Greggs breakfast.
He also insists on digging up the same stretch of road every few months “for improvements,” though it’s widely suspected he’s just in it for the digging. Wallace claims it’s about refining his tarmacking technique, but he’s less civil engineer and more overgrown toddler with a taxpayer-funded shovel. His dream retirement plan is to be buried in a hole he dug himself, ideally next to a traffic cone he once emotionally bonded with.
